NASUWT COMMENTS ON CENTREFORUM REPORT

Commenting on CentreForum’s first annual report into the state of education in England, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“However hard schools work, they will struggle to close the attainment gap unless the Government develops a coherent policy to tackle poverty and deprivation.

“Poverty is a key inhibitor to educational progress and schools cannot tackle this alone. The Government needs a coherent strategy which tackles poverty, housing and health.

“Underinvestment in schools will exacerbate these problems. Too many children are already finding their access to educational opportunities is limited by parents’ ability to pay.”
