NASUWT COMMENTS ON BEHAVIOUR IN SCHOOLS REPORT

Commenting on the report into pupil behaviour in schools by the Department for Education’s ‘behaviour tsar’ Tom Bennett, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“There is little in this report that is new or will be of any surprise to classroom teachers. Most of the report’s findings about the critical importance of leadership and management in promoting positive pupil behaviour repeat those made in many previous official investigations over the last thirty years.

“There is absolutely no excuse for any school to be ignorant of the steps that they can and must take to maintain and sustain good behaviour. It is therefore highly dispiriting that the NASUWT still encounters schools where even the most basic of these measures are not in place and where teachers are not supported when they raise concerns or report incidents of pupil indiscipline.

“The Government must show it is fulfilling its responsibility to make sure that every school secures a calm and orderly working and learning environment and ensure that schools are properly supported and resourced to maintain good order and discipline.”
