Energy Giant E.ON Signs The TUC Dying to Work Charter

Energy Giant E.ON Signs

The TUC Dying to Work Charter

Energy giant E.ON has become the first UK company to sign up to the TUC Dying to Work campaign voluntary charter committing them to supporting and helping terminally ill workers.

The signing will take place at 11.00am on Monday 18th April at a public signing ceremony in Parliament. The event will be attended by E.ON HR Director Dave Newborough and the TUC Deputy General Secretary Paul Nowak.

This is the first company to sign up to the Charter, which was initiated by the TUC so that employers can voluntarily sign up to support workers who are diagnosed with terminal illness. It is part of the TUC’s wider Dying to Work campaign which is seeking to change the law to secure terminally ill workers a ‘protected period’ where they cannot be dismissed as a result of their condition.

E.ON signing up and pledging support came after representations were made by the GMB Union.

The TUC Dying to Work Voluntary Charter includes the following commitments from employers;

- To recognise that terminal illness requires support and understanding, not additional stress and worry

- That terminally ill workers will be secure in the knowledge that the company will support them following their diagnosis and recognise that safe and reasonable work can maintain dignity, offer a valuable distraction and can be therapeutic in itself

- Companies who sign the Charter agree to provide employees with the security of work, peace of mind and the right to choose the best course of action for themselves and their families which helps them through with dignity, respect and without undue financial loss

- Companies who sign up to the Charter agree to support the TUC Dying to Work campaign so that all employees battling terminal illness have adequate employment protection and have their death in service benefits protected for the loved ones they leave behind.

In addition to the above a new negotiators guide to terminal illness has just been released outlining how representatives can raise the issue and broach the topic with employers.

Both the Charter and the Negotiators Guide can be found at http://www.dyingtowork.co.uk/campaignpack/

Now we have our first employer on board it is our intention to encourage affiliates to approach employers where they have recognition and begin to create a long list of employers who will pledge to sign up and support the Charter.

The time to deliver for terminally ill workers is now and we thank you for your continued support.
