NASUWT COMMENTS ON THE IFS REPORT INTO SCHOOL FUNDING
Commenting on the release of the Institute for Fiscal Studies report into school funding, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:
“The IFS report provides a wake-up call to the Government about the need to invest in schools. Despite the promises given by the Prime Minister before the General Election, government spending on schools has actually fallen in real terms, leading to increasing pressures on school budgets.
“These real term cuts to spending are impacting on the educational provision for children and young people, which is leading to increased pressures on schools to turn to other sources of income, including charging parents for services.
“The Government is part way through a consultation on reforms to the school funding system It needs to provide significant additional investment before attempting radical change in this area.
“There is a real danger that winners and losers will be created in the system.”
