NASUWT COMMENTS ON WORKPLACE INEQUALITY REPORT BY MPs

Commenting on the report by the Women and Equalities Committee looking at the employment inequalities faced by Muslims in the UK, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK said:

“The findings of this report are disturbing. Muslim women should never fear discrimination at work if they choose to dress in a way that is appropriate to their religious beliefs.

“We welcome recommendations which identify the need for Government and national administrations to set a clear lead in developing clear strategies to tackle discrimination in access to jobs and promotion.

“Racism and religious intolerance are a feature in too many workplaces, and research for the NASUWT shows that around half of teachers from BME backgrounds have experienced unfair treatment because of their ethnicity.

“As part of the Act for Racial Justice initiative launched last year by the NASUWT, schools, colleges and communities are being invited to work together to challenge racial and religious prejudice, intolerance and discrimination in the workplace and in wider society.”
