NASUWT COMMENTS ON THE PRIME MINISTER’S SPEECH TO THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY CONFERENCE

Commenting on Prime Minister Teresa May’s speech to the Conservative Party Conference today, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’’ union in the UK, said:

“We welcome the fact that the Prime Minister clearly recognises that the education, social and economic policies of her predecessor have led to inequality across education and other public services.

“Whilst we welcome the intention behind the audit of public services to address racial disparities, the fact is that in education, the Department for Education is already in possession of a wealth of evidence, much of it provided by NASUWT, on racial and other inequalities faced by young people, teachers and the education workforce in general.

“Audits and information gathering are all very well, but they are no substitute for the urgent action which is needed to tackle the deep injustices rife in the system.”
